Tim Burgess has written a tribute to Rob Collins, the late keyboardist of The Charlatans, on the 30th anniversary of Collins’ death, according to NME.
Collins died in a car crash on July 22, 1996, when he was 33. At the time, The Charlatans were recording their fifth album, Tellin’ Stories, at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales.
In his tribute, Burgess reflected on Collins’ role in the band, describing him as a close friend and a major part of The Charlatans’ sound. He recalled Collins’ Hammond organ playing, their songwriting sessions, and the years they spent touring and spending time together away from the band.
Burgess also said the band found a way to continue after Collins’ death, later bringing in Tony Rogers. The Charlatans went on to record more albums and still tour, while Burgess said Collins remains with the band “in spirit” and that friends can stay with us if their memory is kept alive.
