State hearing set for SRP’s Marigold Energy Center project in Stanfield

A major energy project planned south of Maricopa is set to go before a state panel on Monday, according to InMaricopa. The Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee will begin a hearing on SRP’s proposed Marigold Energy Center in Stanfield.

The hearing is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Monday at the Francisco Grande Hotel & Golf Resort in Casa Grande. It is expected to continue at 9 a.m. each weekday through Sept. 25 if needed.

SRP’s proposal calls for a 230-kilovolt/500-kilovolt substation, about 4 miles of new 230-kilovolt transmission lines, 600 megawatts of solar generation, 400 megawatts of battery storage and up to 675 megawatts of gas-fired generation.

Residents who attended an SRP open house in July raised concerns about public safety, fire safety, water use, emissions and possible effects on local air quality, according to the report. SRP said it was working through those issues and responding to community input.

A public comment session is planned for 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Francisco Grande, and people can also take part by phone or Zoom. Electrical District No. 3, which serves Maricopa, Stanfield and nearby areas, is also considering a partnership with SRP to buy some of the energy from the project.
