A pedestrian was hospitalized with minor injuries Thursday night after being hit by a vehicle near John Wayne Parkway and Edison Road in Maricopa, according to InMaricopa.
Police said the crash happened around 7:20 p.m. when the vehicle struck the man at low speed in a crosswalk on Edison Road. First responders treated him on the sidewalk before taking him by ambulance to the hospital.
Authorities said the driver cooperated with officers and was cited for failure to yield.
Several pedestrians were nearby while medics responded, including Maricopa resident Christopher Blaisdell, who said he has also been injured in a pedestrian crash in town. Blaisdell said he believes more needs to be done to improve safety in the area.
InMaricopa reported that Maricopa police responded to 13 pedestrian crashes and 14 bicyclist crashes last year. The department also released an educational video urging drivers to yield, and the City Council approved an ordinance in April allowing bicycles, e-bikes and scooters on sidewalks, which took effect May 21.
