Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth has announced Numbskull, his first album since 2018’s Elsewhere and his first release for Topshelf Records, according to Pitchfork. The project is set to arrive on October 21.
The album moves through styles including trip-hop, electroclash, hyperpop, and rave. Hemsworth’s first single from the record, “One Step,” brings together elements of Southern rap, UK hardcore, and punk.
In a statement, Hemsworth said the song began with ideas inspired by old Three 6 Mafia tapes and 1990s UK rave music. He said he initially expected the track would need a rapper, but later connected with Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties, who joined the collaboration.
Numbskull also includes appearances from Tegan and Sara, Nana Lourdes, Allie, and MSpaint. Hemsworth has not announced a headlining tour for the album, though he will support George Clanton in November.
