One of the world’s best-known neuroscientists, Christof Koch, explored a central question in consciousness research during the 15th “Behind and Beyond the Brain” Symposium, according to ScienceDaily: does the brain create consciousness, or is consciousness a more basic feature of reality?
Researchers can measure which parts of the brain become active during sight, pain, memory, and decision-making. But, as ScienceDaily notes, those measurements still do not explain why physical activity in the brain is paired with subjective experience.
Koch’s talk focused on the limits of materialism, the view that everything can ultimately be explained through matter, energy, and physical laws. He also pointed to questions raised by modern physics and unusual experiences such as near-death episodes, mystical states, and terminal lucidity.
While those experiences do not prove consciousness exists apart from the brain, Koch argues they should be studied carefully because they may reveal gaps in current scientific models. He also pointed to ideas such as idealism and panpsychism, along with his support for Integrated Information Theory, which tries to describe consciousness mathematically.
Koch, who works at the Allen Institute for Brain Science and previously taught at MIT and Caltech, has also helped develop ways to detect possible awareness in patients who appear unresponsive, according to ScienceDaily.
