Martha Reeves is speaking out after her version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the inaugural Women’s Professional Baseball League game on Saturday, Aug. 1, drew attention online. The Motown legend performed at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois, where she was joined by backup singers.
According to Stereogum, a rehearsal video obtained by TMZ shows Reeves telling one backup singer she was out of tune. Over the stadium microphone, Reeves also said, “I don’t think I need them. I don’t need them.”
After the performance went viral, Reeves shared a statement with TMZ saying it was an honor to be invited to the event and to take part in a historic moment for women in sports. She also said she had recently turned 85 and has more than 60 years of experience performing live.
Reeves said the wet, windy field conditions and the lack of stage monitors made it difficult to hear herself as she normally would. She added that while the performance was not what she had hoped for, she was grateful to support the athletes and the new league.
