Glen Hansard was remembered with music and tributes at his funeral in Dublin on Tuesday, according to Rolling Stone. Hansard died on July 29 at age 56 following a motorcycle crash.
U2’s Bono played a recorded musical message from Patti Smith before speaking and reciting revised lines from “Beautiful Day” in Hansard’s honor. Bono focused much of his tribute on Hansard’s ability to connect with people and build friendship.
Eddie Vedder performed Hansard’s “The Song of Good Hope,” joined by Markéta Irglová, who shared the 2008 Oscar for best original song with Hansard for “Falling Slowly” from Once. Bono and the Edge also took part in the service.
Other musicians in attendance included Hozier, Imelda May, and Jake Clemons, along with Liam Ó Maonlaí of Hothouse Flowers. Toward the end of the service, Vedder, Bono, the Edge and others joined in a group performance of Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young.”
