Maricopa Unified School District is preparing to open Alma Farrell Innovation Academy next week, according to a district press release. The nearly 100,000-square-foot campus marks the completion of one of the district’s largest projects and the launch of Arizona’s first K-8 work-based learning school.
The school is built to introduce students to careers and industries starting in kindergarten. Through hands-on projects and partnerships with local businesses and organizations, students will explore a range of professions while still receiving traditional academic instruction.
District leaders broke ground on the campus in May 2025 and described it as an investment in Maricopa’s future. A year later, governing board members unanimously chose to name the school after former Superintendent Alma Farrell, recognizing her role in the district’s growth.
Superintendent Tracey Lopeman said the district wants to broaden possibilities for students by helping them meet professionals in different fields. The campus also uses Arizona State University’s Next Education Workforce model, which brings educators together to personalize learning through project-based instruction.
An invitation-only ribbon cutting is set for 10 a.m. Monday, and students and staff will begin the school year later this month.
