Lucy Dacus has released an acoustic version of Blaze Foley’s “Clay Pigeons” for an upcoming tribute album titled Sittin’ With Blaze, according to Rolling Stone.
The compilation is set to arrive Friday, August 7, and will feature artists including Phosphorescent, Lucinda Williams, Willie Watson, Cactus Lee, Dylan Earl, Uncle Lucius, Riley Downing and others covering songs by the late Texas songwriter.
In a Monday interview with Apple Music 1 host Matt Wilkinson, Dacus said a friend introduced her to the song and that it made an immediate impression on her. She said she quickly came to think of it as one of the best songs ever written.
Dacus also said she hopes listeners who hear her version will be led back to Foley’s original work. Foley, who was born in Arkansas and later made Austin his home in the 1970s, is widely regarded as one of Texas’ great songwriters.
Foley was fatally shot in 1989 at age 39 while visiting a friend’s house. His life was later the subject of the 2018 film Blaze, directed by Ethan Hawke and starring Ben Dickey.
