Jurors in Duane “Keffe D” Davis’ murder trial heard a recorded 2008 interview on Thursday, the fourth day of proceedings in Las Vegas, according to Rolling Stone. Prosecutors say the interview is central to their case in the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed Tupac Shakur.
In the recording, Davis told investigators he was in the front passenger seat of the rented white Cadillac that pulled alongside the black BMW carrying Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight, according to testimony quoted by Rolling Stone. Davis said his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, was in the back seat and that he passed a loaded .40-caliber Glock to the rear before Anderson fired.
Former LAPD Det. Daryn Dupree testified that he and Det. Greg Kading first approached Davis in 2008 while investigating the murder of Christopher Wallace, also known as the Notorious B.I.G. Dupree said they told Davis about evidence they believed tied him to drug crimes and that Davis later made a statement during a recorded proffer session at a lawyer’s office in Los Angeles County.
According to the article, prosecutors argue Davis effectively confessed in that interview and later repeated parts of the account publicly in interviews and in his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend. Davis, 63, has pleaded not guilty to murder with use of a deadly weapon and has been jailed since his arrest in September 2023.
Prosecutors say the shooting was retaliation for a fight hours earlier at the MGM Grand, while Davis’ defense says he made up the story for his own advantage. The trial is continuing.
