J Mascis made his Grand Ole Opry debut last night when he joined John R. Miller onstage in Nashville, according to Stereogum.
Miller introduced Mascis as a surprise guest and the two performed “Steering Wheel Drums” from Miller’s new album, The Great Unknowing. The record was recently released digitally and was recorded at Leon Russell’s Church Studio in Tulsa.
After the Opry appearance, Mascis also played with Miller at a pop-up show at the Vinyl Tap record store, where they covered “Cortez The Killer.”
In the same Opry show, Switchfoot also made its debut and brought out Lainey Wilson for “Beautiful Life.” Miller later told Rolling Stone that seeing Mascis perform on the Opry stage felt “incredibly cool and surreal.”
