The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for Maricopa, with the advisory in effect from Thursday through Monday, according to InMaricopa.
Meteorologist Matt Salerno said the area is headed for a hot spell, even for people used to desert temperatures. Thursday is expected to reach around 110 degrees, with temperatures rising through the week and peaking near 116 degrees on Saturday.
InMaricopa noted that Maricopa has seen record highs in past Julys, including 115 degrees on July 23, 2018, 116 on July 24, 2014, and back-to-back records of 119 and 118 degrees on July 25 and 26, 2023.
Salerno urged residents to take precautions by staying hydrated, drinking electrolytes, wearing light clothing and checking on others. He also recommended limiting outdoor activity to the early morning or after sunset. Cooling centers listed by the Pinal County Coalition to End Homelessness include the Maricopa Library and Cultural Center, La Frontera of Arizona and Thunderbird Fire District.
