InMaricopa Associate Editor Monica D. Spencer says one of the best parts of journalism is that every day brings something different. In her Aug. 4, 2026 editor’s letter, she writes that the work continues to revolve around meeting people and hearing their stories, even as her role has grown to include editing and shaping each issue.
Spencer said the variety of reporting can take her from photographing a family business or school event to interviewing a construction worker, then on to a city council meeting or community fundraiser. Over time, she added, the constant has been the opportunity to connect with people she might not otherwise have met.
She said the thread running through the latest issue is conversation. Among the stories she points to is an interview with Assistant Chief Chris Bolinger about how Maricopa firefighters prepare each summer for Arizona’s heat.
The issue also includes coverage from editorial intern Kaydence Shipman on local educators preparing to welcome students back, a photo gallery by Ryan Tafoya from the senior community’s patriotic celebration of America’s 250th birthday, and a recipe from Desert Cedars resident Tiffany Welch.
