Dawn Richard has announced details of her first solo album in five years. Creole Culture is set to arrive on October 9 through Merge, according to Pitchfork.
The album includes Big Freedia on the opening track, “A Creole Culture Intro.” Richard has also released “Enough,” the second song shared from the project after “Baby, Can We?,” her June collaboration with Durand Bernarr.
In press notes, Richard said “Enough” is about “unlearning the lie that your value has to be earned.” She added that “the greatest act of resistance is believing you were always worthy.”
Richard said Creole Culture completes a trilogy that began with 2019’s New Breed and continued with 2021’s Second Line: An Electro Revival. She described those earlier records as stories shaped by her father and mother, while saying her own version of the story still needed to be told.
Since 2021, Richard has also worked with composer Spencer Zahn on Pigments and Quiet in a World Full of Noise, and last year she teamed up with saxophonist Joseph Shabason on the Sade tribute “Broken Hearted Sade.”
