Footage has emerged of Dave Chappelle objecting after the Fugees’ set was cut short at Lauryn Hill’s Diaspora Calling! festival, according to NME.
The event took place at Milton Keynes National Bowl on August 7 and featured Hill and Wyclef Jean, along with Erykah Badu, Giggs, and Hill’s sons YG Marley and Zion Marley. Fans were disappointed when the performance ended early because the venue had licensing restrictions that prevented the show from continuing past 11pm BST.
According to the report, Hill and Jean tried to address the crowd at 11pm, but their microphones were switched off. A message on the stage screens then apologized for the abrupt ending and explained that the show had to stop because of the venue’s licence.
Chappelle, who was hosting the event, was seen in stage footage urging organisers to let the Fugees continue. He said the interruption was “f*cking up history” and asked crew members who he could speak to, while also leading chants of “Let us close.”
Wyclef Jean later told The Sun that he was sad about how the set ended and hoped the group could continue the performance next year. He said the crowd’s energy showed the importance of the event’s message of unity.
