Dane Cook is speaking publicly about the financial betrayal he says he suffered at the hands of his half-brother and former manager, Darryl McCauley. In the trailer for Cook’s new documentary Funny Money, he describes the relationship and the alleged theft that upended his finances.
According to E! News, McCauley was charged and convicted nearly 18 years ago for embezzling about $12 million from Cook. During Cook’s rise in comedy in the early 2000s, McCauley handled his money as his business manager.
The trailer says the withdrawals allegedly started smaller and then grew over time, with money taken in increasingly large amounts. Cook says he began to suspect something was wrong and wondered whether the cash was being hidden away in different places.
The documentary also alleges that McCauley concealed stolen money in unusual spots, including jars of spaghetti sauce in the kitchen. McCauley was arrested in 2008, later pleaded guilty to larceny, forgery, embezzlement and other charges in 2010, and was sentenced to five years in prison, according to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office as cited by Courthouse News Service.
Cook says in the trailer that his brother disappeared after leaving the bank and questions what happened after that. Funny Money is set to release on Sept. 29.
