Billie Joe Armstrong covers Bowie with Bruce Dickinson and honors Jennifer Finch

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong performed at two recent shows with his cover band The Coverups, including a tribute to L7 bassist Jennifer Finch and a Bowie cover with Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson, according to NME.

On Monday, July 20, The Coverups played The Roxy in West Hollywood, California, where they worked through a set of classic rock songs. During the show, Armstrong introduced a version of Nirvana’s “Drain You” by dedicating it to Finch, who died two days earlier at the age of 59 after being diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer.

At the band’s next performance, held Thursday, July 23, at San Diego’s Hard Rock Hotel, Dickinson joined the group for a rendition of David Bowie’s 1972 song “All The Young Dudes.” The set also included “Ziggy Stardust” and covers of songs by The Strokes, Tom Petty, Buzzcocks and Bryan Adams.

The Coverups, which also feature Green Day touring member Jason White, audio engineer Chris Dugan and tour manager Bill Schneider, are known for spontaneous shows that often include guest appearances. NME noted that the band had previously been joined on stage in London by Courtney Love and, in 2018, by Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan.

Finch’s death was announced over the weekend by L7, who described her as a beloved bandmate, friend and a key figure in the band’s history and the Los Angeles punk scene.
