Traffic signal installation begins at crash-prone Desert Greens and Smith-Enke

A traffic signal is finally on the way for the intersection of Desert Greens Drive and Smith-Enke Road, where crews have already seen a string of crashes, according to the city of Maricopa.

Work on the next phase of the project is scheduled to begin the week of Oct. 5, when crews will install the signal poles and equipment needed to make the light operational.

The city says the construction will continue through the end of October and will take place overnight from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers should expect lane closures in the work zone, but the intersection will stay open and no full road closure is planned.

The signal project was approved unanimously by City Council last year after repeated collisions at the site. The first phase started in June and included a westbound right-turn lane on Smith-Enke Road, plus a traffic signal cabinet and meter pedestal, according to the city.

The city estimates the full project will cost $874,000.
