Tré Cool says Green Day are still talking about an American Idiot movie

Green Day drummer Tré Cool says the long-planned American Idiot film is still a topic of discussion, but he stopped short of confirming that it is actively moving forward, according to NME.

Cool made the comments while discussing Nimrods, a new fictional coming-of-age comedy inspired by the band’s early touring years. He said the movie talk may have picked up again because of the project’s success, and joked that Green Day could keep making records and movies.

When asked whether American Idiot is especially suited for the big screen, Cool said the band remains proud of the 2004 album and called it an important record for them. He added that they are “not not talking about it,” though he also suggested the band should not rush into another film right away.

Cool also said Green Day have been offered biopic ideas over the years, but the band is not interested in dwelling on the past while they are still active. NME notes that an American Idiot movie has been discussed for years, with reports in the past involving Tom Hanks, a script from playwright Rolin Jones, and comments from Billie Joe Armstrong that the project was later “pretty much scrapped,” though he sounded more hopeful last year.
