A California bookstore recently received an unexpected package that turned out to contain a book stolen from the shop about 40 years ago, according to UPI Odd News.
Booklegger in Old Town Eureka said on social media that employees opened the package and found a copy of The Unstrung Harp by Edward Gorey, along with a handwritten apology and $100.
The note said the sender had taken the book decades earlier while a student at Humboldt State University and later rediscovered it in a box in a garage. The writer said they were sorry for their “utter lack of principles” and asked the store to reach out if there was anything else they could do to make amends.
Booklegger owner Jennifer McFadden told Lost Coast Outpost that she and her staff were touched by the return. She said it was remarkable that after so much time, the person still wanted to try to correct a mistake they regretted.
