Shirley Manson apologises to Mel C for past Spice Girls criticism

Garbage singer Shirley Manson has apologised to former Spice Girl Mel C after remarks she made years ago about the group were brought up on a recent podcast, according to NME.

On the July 6 episode of The Louis Theroux Podcast, Theroux read out old critical comments from music figures aimed at the Spice Girls, including one from Manson. Mel C reacted calmly to the remarks and said the group likely drew criticism because they were seen as highly commercial and not to everyone’s taste.

The article notes that Manson had previously described the Spice Girls as “abhorrent” in a 2016 interview and questioned the value of their feminist message. After seeing Mel C’s response shared on the podcast’s Instagram, Manson posted an apology in the comments.

In her message, Manson said she felt terrible about what she had said, admitted she had misjudged what the group meant to young girls, and called her earlier comments reckless and cruel. Mel C later replied that she adored Manson and held no hard feelings.
