Shania Twain is taking listeners back to her early years in Northern Ontario on her new album, “Little Miss Twain,” which comes out Friday, according to ABC News.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Twain said the album covers a part of her life that many fans do not know much about. She described playing in Canadian bars as a child for small, rough crowds of miners, lumberjacks, fishermen and hunters, often not able to enter until after the bar closed because she was underage.
Twain said the record reaches from her first performances at age 8 through her late 20s, when she signed her first major label deal. Several songs had been in progress for years, including “Rockstars” and “Northern Town.”
The title track, “Little Miss Twain,” is a tribute to her mother, who died in a 1987 car crash with Twain’s stepfather and never saw her rise to fame. Twain said the song reflects her mother’s role in her early career, including driving her to performances and helping guide her work. Tanya Tucker appears on the track, and Twain’s son, Eja D’Angelo Lange, sings background vocals on some songs.
Twain also said the album blends country with other influences such as Motown, classic western sounds, and rock. She said her voice now has a different quality after Lyme disease affected it and she later underwent a 2018 procedure involving implants in her larynx. Twain said she hopes listeners come away with a better sense of the environment and experiences that shaped her.
