Minnesota town unveils 65-foot nutcracker it hopes is the world's largest

A Minnesota city is seeking Guinness World Records recognition for a new landmark it says could be the world’s largest nutcracker.

According to UPI Odd News, the 65-foot-tall sculpture, named Verne the Patriot, was recently installed near the edge of Luverne and opened to the public during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday.

The nutcracker was designed by artist Katie Walgrave and is part of Luverne’s nutcracker-themed tourism campaign, which the city adopted in 2017. The idea was inspired by local resident Betty Mann, 96, who became known for her collection of 7,554 nutcrackers.

The current Guinness World Record for the largest nutcracker was set in Germany in 2008 by a sculpture that stands 33 feet, 1 inch tall. Walgrave told KMSP-TV that Verne is nearly twice that height, and the city hopes the new display will take the title.
