Shania Twain says her latest album, Little Miss Twain, is a look back at the life that led her to become one of country music’s biggest stars. In an interview with CBS News, she said the project reflects her journey from performing as a child to finding her place in music years later.
Twain recalled starting to sing in bars when she was just 8 years old, growing up poor in rural Ontario, and dealing with difficult conditions at home. She said those early experiences stayed with her for years and contributed to the stage fright she felt for much of her career.
The singer also spoke about setbacks later in life, including the death of her parents in a car crash when she was 22, her divorce from producer Mutt Lange, and the loss of her singing voice after Lyme disease. Twain said she went 15 years without releasing music before undergoing experimental open-throat surgery that helped bring her voice back.
Now in her 60s, Twain said she feels she is finally “getting it right” and is able to look back with more peace and gratitude. She told CBS News that Little Miss Twain is about reflecting on her life with a smile, and said she still enjoys experimenting with her voice as she performs older songs in new ways.
