Robert Smith has weighed in on the FIFA Men's World Cup Final's planned halftime show, and the Cure frontman did not hide his annoyance, according to Stereogum.
This year's tournament has taken place across the United States, Canada and Mexico, and Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will feature a halftime performance for the first time. Coldplay's Chris Martin curated the show, which is set to include Madonna, Justin Bieber, Shakira and BTS.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has called the event a “groundbreaking spectacle” meant to celebrate football, music and shared values, according to the source. The Cure's official Instagram account also shared that description.
Smith responded with a string of exasperated letters and the hashtags “#Breadandcircuses” and “#MUGWANK,” along with “#pleasejustfuckoff,” Stereogum reported. The final between Spain and defending champions Argentina is scheduled to kick off Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
