Perennial has released “Modernism,” the title track from the New England trio’s upcoming album, according to Stereogum.
The song leans into old-school rock and roll energy while also bringing in party-punk attitude. It features a stripped-down but active arrangement, with instruments dropping in and out as Chelsey Hahn and Chad Jewitt trade vocals over a pogo-punk beat.
According to the band’s description, the goal was to make a bold opening statement while also pushing beyond the usual fast garage-rock formula. Perennial said it wanted to mix the spirit of songs like “Kick Out The Jams” and “Strawberry Fields Forever,” using drum machine, mellotron, and electric piano where loud guitars are absent.
Modernism is due out Sept. 18 on Ernest Jenning Record Co. The album is available for pre-order now.
