Porter Robinson and Ninajirachi have released their first collaboration, “WannaCry,” which arrived July 28 on I Love Cats/NLV Records, according to Billboard.
In an interview with Billboard, Robinson said he reached out to Ninajirachi after seeing a strong connection between their styles. Ninajirachi said she would not typically be the one to send a collaboration message herself, making Robinson’s DM the spark that brought the project together.
The pair worked on the song in Robinson’s Chapel Hill, North Carolina studio earlier this year. Robinson said he was especially focused on making something Ninajirachi would connect with, while she contributed heavily to the writing and helped reshape the production.
Both artists described the process as quick and natural, with Ninajirachi saying they returned to the original idea after trying other sketches. Robinson said the reaction has been immediate and surprising, adding that he has already received messages from people he did not expect to like the song.
