Police in Maricopa arrested 47-year-old Zulema Herrera-Harper on suspicion of shoplifting and resisting arrest after a reported theft at Fry’s Marketplace, according to a probable cause statement cited by InMaricopa.
Store employees told police Herrera-Harper spent more than two hours inside the store and placed about $1,000 worth of merchandise into 12 reusable bags. Investigators say she then went to self-checkout and began “skip scanning,” a practice in which a shopper does not scan every item.
According to the statement, roughly $500 in groceries was not scanned during the transaction. Officers also said Herrera-Harper resisted arrest by moving her hands and trying to walk away as they attempted to handcuff her.
InMaricopa reports the incident is the fourth shoplifting attempt reported in Maricopa and the second at Fry’s Marketplace in the past month. Other recent cases included a suspect using an old receipt, another claiming not to know how to use scanning apps, and a person trying to leave a store with merchandise in hand.
