Phil Collins says he has not had a drink in three years after what he described as “dark times” with alcohol addiction, according to NME.
In a new interview with Prog, the former Genesis singer and drummer said his health is now “100 per cent” physically and that he has been working with regular physiotherapy three times a week. He said he was no longer drinking and added, “All is good!”
Collins also reflected on the impact alcohol had on his body, saying his kidneys and liver “were waving the white flag.” He said he was close to dying and had not realized how serious the situation had become, believing at the time that he was simply ill.
The musician was admitted to hospital in November 2023 and later spent seven months in treatment, with his condition becoming critical in April 2024, according to the interview. He has also said he now needs a 24-hour live-in nurse to help manage his medication and has undergone five knee operations.
Despite his health issues, Collins said making music again is still possible. He said he has a studio and would like to experiment there, adding that it is “not beyond the realms of possibility” that he could finish some songs. He also said he would not perform at his upcoming Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, but might consider live performance again in the future.
