Pete Tong has responded after John Summit accused him online of stealing an unreleased remix of Everything But The Girl’s “Missing.” In a statement and interview published Friday, Tong said the accusations “are simply not supported by the facts,” according to Billboard.
Summit made the allegations on X earlier in the week, posting screenshots of texts related to an orchestral remix the two had discussed. He later said he had spoken with Dutch DJ Franky Rizardo, who said he did not know about the situation, and Rizardo later posted that he no longer felt it was right to be involved in the release.
Tong said he and Summit had positive text exchanges about creating a new version of Summit’s remix, while he was also discussing a different version with Rizardo. He said the plan was to have multiple versions, including an orchestral version for his Ibiza Classics tour, and that he received permission from Everything But The Girl’s Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt to proceed.
According to Tong’s team, the Rizardo version was a newly recorded production made with Tong and his label, with all musical parts re-recorded, including the vocal. Tong also said his team tried to follow up with Summit and his representatives, but did not receive a response, and added that they never received a session from him.
Summit’s team had not responded publicly by the time Billboard published the report. The dispute comes as “Missing” continues to be played in Summit’s sets, and Summit appears to be preparing his own orchestral version for his sold-out Tofte Manor show this weekend.
