Paul Wesley says he believes his on-set intensity may have contributed to the tension he once had with Nina Dobrev on The Vampire Diaries, according to E! News. On the July 22 episode of Call Her Daddy, Wesley described himself as a “curmudgeon” and said he was taking his acting very seriously.
Wesley said he and Dobrev never openly said they hated each other, but he admitted he was intense while other cast members were more relaxed. He added that he and Dobrev would argue on set at times, though they remained professional.
Looking back on their first meeting during auditions, Wesley said he deliberately avoided acknowledging Dobrev at first because he wanted their characters’ first interaction to happen on camera. He said that when they finally read together in front of executives, there was immediate chemistry.
Wesley also said the cast grew up over time and that he eventually calmed down. He recalled telling Dobrev she would miss him one day when she left the show, and said his comment proved true when she returned for the 2016 series finale.
