Nashville indie-rock band Lombardy is drawing attention with its song “Jane Fonda,” a track from the group’s debut album, Catch a Buzz, Not the Fuzz, according to Rolling Stone. The band also leaned into the song’s retro theme in its music video, where they appear in 1980s-style workout gear.
Bassist Seth Renfrow told Rolling Stone’s Nashville Now podcast that the song was inspired in part by the aerobics-video culture of the 1980s and 1990s. Singer-guitarist Mike Scott, who co-wrote the track with Renfrow, said Jane Fonda represented the kind of retro fitness icon they wanted to reference.
Renfrow said the song is really about community and the scene the band is helping build in Nashville. He described it as tied to everyday moments in the city, including spending time at East Nashville bar Mickey’s and hanging out downtown.
Guitarist Jonathan Plevyak said the song also reflects the enjoyment that can get lost in the grind of being an indie artist. Lombardy, which also includes drummer Steve Mascarello, has a regional tour scheduled for August, beginning Aug. 14 in Kansas City, Missouri, and including a stop at the inaugural Delaware Beaches Songwriters Festival in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
