Fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000 are getting a fresh dose of the show’s signature music as the new MST3K: The RiffTrax Experiments moves forward, according to Billboard. The project brings together RiffTrax alumni Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett for a four-episode return to the Satellite of Love.
The Kickstarter for the revival was launched in February with a goal of $20,000, but it ultimately brought in $2.7 million. The first episode is set to screen in theaters on Sept. 9 and Sept. 13 through Fathom Entertainment and RiffTrax, with backers’ access planned for October.
In the Billboard interview, the trio discussed the show’s musical history and how songs were created for the original series. Nelson said he often wrote music on a keyboard tucked into a small phone closet, while Corbett described the comedy-first process behind songs like “The Canada Song.”
The article also notes that musician Jonathan Coulton has created a new version of the theme song for the upcoming episodes. Along with that update, the new installments are expected to include fresh music moments for longtime fans of the cult favorite.
