Mount Dora, Florida, is asking residents to stay back after multiple wild monkey sightings were reported in the city, according to UPI Odd News.
A rhesus macaque was photographed last month outside the Lakeside Inn, and another monkey was caught on camera on July 15 at Gilbert Park. Resident Priscilla Spears also said she saw a monkey near a shopping plaza last week.
“We have received reports of monkey sightings within the city. While seeing a monkey may be unusual, please remember they are wild, feral animals and should be admired from a safe distance,” the city said in a social media post Monday.
Mount Dora is about 12 miles from Silver Springs, where a wild population of monkeys has lived since rhesus macaques escaped an island after being brought there by a tour boat operator in 1938, according to the report.
