The Heritage District’s Cesar Chavez Lane has been officially renamed Paul Shirk Avenue, according to InMaricopa. The change was marked by an unveiling ceremony hosted Tuesday morning by the Maricopa Historical Society and the City of Maricopa.
The 540-foot street now honors the late Maricopa historian, whom speakers described as a major influence on the city’s history and its residents. The ceremony took place near the Maricopa Museum and Visitor Center, where city officials and Shirk’s friends shared memories of his work.
Maricopa Historical Society member Peggy Chapados said the renaming recognized Shirk’s leadership, dedication and commitment to the community. Mayor Nancy Smith, Maricopa Historical Society President Denny Hoeh and real estate agent Chad Chatterton helped with the street sign unveiling.
According to InMaricopa, Shirk died last year and is credited with helping develop the Maricopa Museum and Visitor Center and arranging the transfer of the California Zephyr train from Pinal County to the City of Maricopa. The name change was approved unanimously after recent multiple sexual abuse allegations were made earlier this year against Cesar Chavez, and several alternate names had been considered before council support settled on Shirk’s name.
