The Rolling Stones frontman was at the match between England and Argentina on July 15, when England took an early lead through Anthony Gordon’s goal before Enzo Fernández equalised late in the game. Lautaro Martínez then scored the winner, sending Argentina through with a 2-1 victory.
Footage of Jagger shaking his head in disappointment after Fernández’s goal quickly spread across social media. Fans responded with jokes and memes, with one saying the clip had “big meme potential” and another writing that “Mick Jagger speaks for the nation.”
England supporters have long joked that Jagger is “cursed” at football tournaments because he has attended several painful losses, including England’s semi-final defeat to Croatia in 2018 and Germany’s 7-1 win over Brazil in 2014. NME also noted that Jagger recently said he is already writing songs for the Rolling Stones’ next album.
