Mick Jagger and Keith Richards say AI music must be original

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are voicing concern about the use of artificial intelligence in music, saying artists should add their own ideas instead of relying on imitation, according to Rolling Stone.

In a recent Billboard interview, Jagger said he does not want AI to mimic his voice or playing, or for people to release songs that sound exactly like the Rolling Stones. He said using AI is fine if the result is original and includes the creator’s own thoughts.

Richards said he would rather hear something new than music that copies existing work. He argued that musicians should not keep repeating and recycling the same ideas when originality is still available.

Even with their skepticism, the pair said they enjoyed using deepfake technology for the music video for “In the Stars,” from their recent album Foreign Tongues. Jagger also commented on Olivia Rodrigo’s rock work in the interview, calling her “really good” at the style, while Richards said the band has not announced live shows for the album release but he is not ruling out 2027.
