Spotify is testing a new “About the Song” feature that uses third-party sources to generate short descriptions about tracks, but Lorde says the tool crossed a line. According to Rolling Stone, the singer criticized the feature on Thursday after seeing an inaccurate summary attached to one of her songs.
In an Instagram Stories post, Lorde shared Spotify’s description of her song “Current Affairs,” which described a performance moment from her tour. She said the information was wrong and argued that the feature reduced a song to a single AI-generated meaning.
“Hey @spotify i’m gonna go out on a limb n say we don’t want this,” Lorde wrote, according to Rolling Stone. She also said the idea felt like it limited free interpretation and asked Spotify to give artists the ability to opt out.
Rolling Stone noted that Spotify says the feature is still in beta. The report also pointed to broader debates in the music industry over AI, with artists and listeners increasingly weighing how technology should be used in creating and explaining music.
