Matthew McConaughey says a Janet Jackson hit is the reason he stopped smoking weed.
In an interview with Rolling Stone for its My Life In 10 Songs feature, the Oscar winner said “That’s the Way Love Goes” was the song that made him quit. He described hearing it during a period when stronger hydroponic cannabis was becoming more common.
McConaughey said he once took a hit while driving to his own birthday party and ended up listening to the song 24 times in a row in his car. By the time he finally went inside, the party was already over and everyone had left, according to the actor.
He said he still likes the track, calling it “a cool, groovy little tune,” but added that he did not like the weed that led to that experience. According to NME, Jackson’s 1993 single was a major hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks and reaching No. 2 in the UK.
