A California man said he used bear spray to fend off a bear that charged him outside the garage at a vacation home, according to UPI Odd News.
Cortlandt Koerwitz of Sacramento said his daughters first noticed the bear digging through the trash while they were in the garage packing coolers for a Fourth of July boat trip.
Koerwitz told KABC-TV that the bear did not run off as expected and instead moved toward them. He said he grabbed a can of bear spray he keeps near the garage door and used it when the animal turned its attention to him.
Koerwitz said the encounter was captured on a security camera. He also told KCRA-TV that some of the spray blew back into his own eyes, and that bears are common in the area even though the animal’s behavior was unusual.
