Lars Ulrich says Metallica’s Sphere residency feels “overwhelming and intimidating”

Lars Ulrich says Metallica’s upcoming Las Vegas Sphere residency feels “overwhelming and fucking intimidating,” according to NME. The drummer made the comments while discussing the shows on U2 guitarist The Edge’s radio show.

Metallica announced the Sphere residency last February and has since extended it into 2027. The performances are set to use Sphere Immersive Sound and “multi-sensory 4D technology,” with organizers describing the run as a new kind of Metallica experience for fans.

Ulrich said the band has been working on the Sphere production for more than a year. He called it “another level” and said it was exciting to bring the project to the Las Vegas venue.

He also acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying he hopes the band will have things “somewhat together” when they step on stage for the first night on October 1. In the same interview, Ulrich said he was inspired after seeing U2 perform at The Sphere.
