John Carpenter has turned a detailed nightmare into Cathedral, his first graphic novel and a matching soundtrack, according to Billboard. The graphic novel arrived Tuesday, Aug. 4, followed by the album on Friday, Aug. 7.
Carpenter said the idea came from a dream that was unusually narrative and drew from Greek mythology. After he shared it with longtime collaborators Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies, the trio decided to make music for the story.
The graphic novel centers on three police investigators who enter a demonic underworld while looking into the brutal killing of a police officer in an abandoned church. Carpenter worked on the project with Sandy King, Sean Sobczak, illustrators Federico De Luca and Luis Guaragna, colorist Sian Mandrake and letterer Marshall Dillon.
According to Billboard, the soundtrack pushes into heavier rock territory than some of Carpenter’s previous work, with guitars, drums and choirs driving the songs. Carpenter said he is not especially devoted to metal, though he singled out Metallica’s Black Album as a favorite.
