Hilary Duff and former boyfriend Joel Madden are still on good terms more than two decades after they dated, according to E! News. Their friendship was on display when Madden and his brother Benji Madden surprised fans by joining Duff for a performance at her Lucky Me Tour stop at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 5.
During the show, Duff introduced the Good Charlotte musicians as two of her closest friends and joked that they were “day oners.” She and Madden dated when she was a teenager, and their relationship ended in 2006 without any public drama, Duff said in past interviews.
Duff later said she and Madden have maintained a rare and genuinely positive connection. Over the years, she has also said their friendship is helped by the fact that their families live nearby and socialize regularly.
According to E! News, Duff’s husband Matthew Koma, Nicole Richie and the Madden brothers have all appeared comfortable together at gatherings, including a recent “family night” at MSG. Richie has also publicly praised Duff, saying the two have known each other for years and remain friends.
