Ellar Coltrane is opening up about life after Boyhood, more than a decade after the film introduced him to a wide audience. In an interview published Aug. 4, he told Variety that he has moved away from Hollywood and is now living far from the film industry.
Coltrane said he lives “in the middle of nowhere” and is “pretty far away from film.” While he has appeared in a couple of short films since Boyhood, he said his focus has shifted to other work.
“Really, in my life I’ve moved on,” Coltrane said, adding that he does manual labor, volunteers as a firefighter and is working toward his EMT license. He also said reuniting with Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and director Richard Linklater for the film’s 12th anniversary celebration in Austin made him miss being on set and collaborating.
Coltrane said he did not especially enjoy the fame that came with the movie’s release, but he has fond memories of making it. He also noted that because the film was shot over many years and released when he was older, he was able to avoid some of the difficult parts of being a child star, according to E! News.
