Fiona Apple has given fans a rare update on her music, saying she is trying to write about what she called the world’s “endless barrage of horrors.” According to Stereogum, she posted the message in a video on her roommate and close friend Zelda Hallman’s Instagram.
In the video, Apple said she had been writing in the middle of the night and wanted to explain why she has been less visible lately. She said she has been making an effort to address what is happening in the world, but that it has been difficult to find the right words.
Apple said writing about her own life feels different because she is the authority on that subject, but writing about harm done to other people comes with more responsibility. She said she worries about saying things the wrong way and does not want to let anyone down.
She also said she has been trying to speak to a wide range of issues, including violence in Gaza and Sudan, attacks on trans kids, threats to women’s bodily autonomy, abuse against immigrants and their families, voting rights, civil liberties, and the disappearance of Indigenous and Black children, according to Stereogum. Apple said she will keep trying to write and that she cares about what is happening, even if the process is slow and difficult.
