Finn Wolfhard says the planned biopic about The Replacements is still moving forward. In a new Billboard interview, the Stranger Things actor and indie rocker said the project is “going great” and that he and his producers are trying to find a director.
Wolfhard acquired the rights to Bob Mehr’s 2016 book Trouble Boys and is co-writing the screenplay with his father, Eric. He has previously said his parents went on one of their first dates at a Replacements show.
In the interview, Wolfhard said the challenge is making a film that feels true to the band without turning into a standard music biopic. He said he and his father are approaching it as if they were writing about a fictional band, with the focus on the characters rather than big, familiar rock-movie moments.
Wolfhard also said he connects with the band’s fearlessness and self-destructive streak, calling The Replacements the most authentic band ever. He did not say whether he plans to act in the film.
