Drew Starkey says Cary’s fate in Apple TV’s Lucky was both shocking and tragic, following the July 29 episode that featured the character’s death. In an interview with E! News, Starkey said the packed episode felt like “shooting a short play” for him and Anya Taylor-Joy.
In the episode, Cary and Lucky Armstrong are forced to face the fallout from Cary’s decision to run off with $10 million in stolen cash and leave Lucky behind in Las Vegas. Their tense reunion turns into a car chase through San Diego after cops surround Cary’s hideout in La Jolla.
The chase ends with Cary being mortally wounded, and Starkey said filming the scene was intense. Taylor-Joy described the day as “salty, sweaty, and bloody,” while Starkey added, “and just sticky.”
Starkey also noted that the episode explores how Cary, Lucky, and their parents were all shaped by less-than-legal choices. He said the story gives the characters a chance to confront their betrayal while still revealing that they care about each other.
