BTS have decided not to submit music to next year’s Grammys, according to Stereogum. All seven members posted the same message in Korean to their Instagram Stories this morning.
Translated into English, the statement said the group hopes music can be appreciated for what it is, rather than being separated by region or language. They also thanked ARMY and others who have supported them.
The decision comes after the Recording Academy introduced a new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, one of five new categories announced last month. According to Stereogum, the rules for that category require songs to make “meaningful use” of English language.
BTS have long spoken about wanting to win a Grammy. The group has been nominated several times and has performed on the awards show telecast twice, but has never won. Stereogum noted that their boycott puts them among other major artists who have publicly taken issue with the Grammys in recent years.
