Christopher Nolan has revealed an unusual rule on his film sets: he does not want actors wearing Ugg boots between takes. Speaking to Gayle King on CBS Mornings on July 20, the director said he wants performers to remain fully immersed in the scene.
Nolan explained that, for him, the boots represent modern life and can pull people out of the period world he is trying to create. He compared the idea to an actor snacking on chips off camera, saying certain things remind everyone they are back in the real world.
The director said the rule is not about disliking the footwear itself. Instead, he said the comfort of the boots can still feel distracting on set, even when crews, cameras, and microphones are all around.
The footwear ban has become a familiar inside joke for Nolan and some of his cast members. Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Matt Damon have all spoken about the director's reaction to Uggs while working with him on different projects, according to E! News.
