Brian May shares safe viewing tips ahead of tonight’s solar eclipse

Queen guitarist Brian May has been sharing advice on how to watch tonight’s solar eclipse, which is set to be visible across parts of Europe, including a partial eclipse in the UK from 6.30pm BST, according to NME.

May, who earned a PhD in astrophysics in 2007, has been posting regular updates on Instagram in the lead-up to the event. In one post, he warned people not to look straight at the Sun and said they should keep away from telescopes or binoculars aimed at it.

He also suggested using a simple pinhole projection method, recommending that viewers make a small hole in cardboard and practice projecting the Sun’s image onto white card. In another clip, he showed how to project the eclipse onto a plate.

Speaking to BBC Newsnight, May called a total solar eclipse a life-changing experience and said it gives people a unique sense of where they are in space. He added that the moment is brief, but powerful, and described it as an amazing feeling.
